Finsbury Park Trust partnered up with Jannaty Women’s Social Society and Islington Somali Community to provide some festive and winter cheer for local people.
In December around 40 men and women socialised and ate together at a fantastic international meal, cooked by several local women. Different rices, dhals, curries and salads filled everyone up before rice pudding, cakes and mince pies.
It was great to see the meeting rooms full of the local community and was a useful pilot for work we want to do together around food in the near future.
In the week before and after Christmas we also received two large loads of surplus food from the Felix Project, which allowed us to distribute bumper bags of nutritious and novelty food to local people on low incomes. Everyone was very happy to collect the bonus bags and treat their families.
And at the end of January we provided New Year hampers for more local people. We asked people what they wanted most and the answer came back: ‘chicken!’
We were able to feed 15 large families and 15 older isolated people with chickens, fruit and rice.
The winter support was made possible by Local Initiative Funding from Islington council.
